Les garçons sur le toit

De nos chambres, nous pouvons voir le toit d’un immeuble d’environ cinq étages, de l’autre côté de la rue. C’est un toit plutôt achalandé, encombré de bâches bleues et de petits abris qui semblent servir d’habitations à plusieurs personnes. Tous les matins, le toit bourdonne d’activité, car plusieurs hommes, jeunes ou d’âge moyen, sont occupés à se laver, se raser, se préparer, s’aspergeant d’eau dans leurs sous-vêtements, s’habillant pour la journée. Est-ce qu’ils travaillent dans l’édifice ? Dans la soirée, ils s’installent au bord du toit, dans leur uniforme, avec leur téléphone ; ils fument, ils prennent leur pause ou passent le temps en observant la rue, en bas. Ils sont en général isolés, plutôt seuls dans leur bulle. La scène change tous les jours.

For the next few days, leading up to the first day of the exhibition, we work hard with the centre. We finally meet Eve, the director of What About Art, and the centre’s team. On Monday morning, the wooden stretchers arrive at the centre. Then we bring the prints to the centre to get them stretched. Three workers from the stretcher company join us for the job. While we check the sizes, we spot discrepancies with the sizes of the prints and the stretchers. We are busy problem-solving and overseeing the stretching job, which we had expected to take about half a day. As we are working with unexpected problems, we spend the next two days negotiating different sizes with the stretchers, replacing the badly printed banner, sending one small stretcher back and having a big one made. Meanwhile, Eve informs us that the structures are being installed at the boardwalk, so we go there to see them for the first time. Their colour is a light grey and they’re beautifully made, with rocks holding them in place, standing along the edges of the boardwalk. The workers will install the prints with wire and hooks once they arrive.

 Les jours passent vite, et souvent dans l’attente de quelque chose, des coups de fil d’Ève pour commencer la journée en étant renseignés sur les opérations à venir. Parfois, dans l’après-midi, nous nous promenons au marché et achetons des fruits et légumes. Le soir, nous achetons du vin, des collations à prendre avant le dîner.
